Taiwan 7D6N May 2015 – Day 2

It's day two, 19 May 2015 Tuesday. This is the day to leave Gao Xiong and head to Tai Zhong for 3days 2nights!

 20150519_070110

Here's a view from the window early in the morning. We had our breakfast nearby our hostel at 7.30am 20150519_074040

This is how the building of my hostel looks like. This building is separated from Block A to Block D. Ours are Block B which is on the right hand side once you come out from the MRT station.

20150519_08022920150519_07542820150519_074717

We ordered little for breakfast because we thought we will be eating on our walk to the next destination. We have this thought throughout the journey but the truth is that we rally grab any food although we saw stalls at the road side. Anyway, our breakfast costs 130nt (2 cups of soya bean - 30nt and the other 2 plates - 100nt). We wanted to eat Taiwanese kind of breakfast but this shop sells more of western food.

 20150519_073110

The check-out time is 11am but since we are going to Tai Zhong, we check-out around 8.30am so that we could have more time at Tai Zhong. We sat on the MRT from San Duo Shopping District to Kao Shiung Main Station and walked to Ubus office, a 5mins walk. You can just ask around if you're not sure where is the office, there is a tourist information center and numbers of drivers at the station. You can check-out their website (unfortunately, the website is in Mandarin) on the bus trip schedule so that you would save time. By the time we reach their office, it was already 9.12am and the bus is leaving at 9.21am. Thank God that we are just in time and we don't need to wait for the next hour. It costs 250nt per person from Jian Guo station(建國站) to Zhong Gang Zhuan Yun station (台中中港轉運站) and the length of the journey is 2hours and 40minutes.

After 2hours and 40minutes on the bus, it is already 12.20pm, time for lunch! We was told that we could take BRT to Tong Hai Bie Shu Shopping District for lunch and go to Tong Hai University. Inside Tong Hai University, there is a cow farm and Luce memorial Chapel but because we didn't ask where is the locker at Zhong Gang Zhuan Yun station (台中中港轉運站) place, we end up walking with our heavy luggage to Tong Hai Bie Shu Shopping District to eat. After our meal, we have no choice but to check-in at our hostel. We ordered two bowls of beef noodle for 150nt and the portion was enough for 3 person. Sorry for not having a photo of Tong Hai because we was a little frustrated and tired with our luggage. haha! We sat BRT back from Tong Hai Bie Shu Shopping District to Maple Valley Park (7 stops away) and took a taxi(100nt) to our hostel, Migo Stay, 1400nt 3person/per night. Oh ya! forget to mention that our initial plan was to go to GaoMei Wetland for sunset after Tong Hai but due to the far distance, we decided to cancel it off and go to other places.

This room is not as big as the one we had at Gao Shiung. It is a little squeeze but all is fine. Something to improve is the limited number of hanger they provide, only one! and the weak wifi at our room(most probably the modem is place further from our room). Anyway, time to continue on with our journey with a aunt (dad's friend) at 2.30pm. She brought us to the first stop, Maple Valley Park(秋红谷)which is the place we get down from BRT and took a taxi (cab). This park is a detention pond and the only concave park in Taiwan. They did not have the intention to have a detention park at Tai Zhong but it was due to scandal on the previous project that came up with this idea.

20150519_151619 20150519_152316

After Maple Valley Park, we head to National Tai Chung Theater/Taichung Metropolitan Opera House (台中國家歌劇院by bus since it is free for the first 8km and this is something good about Tai Zhong. We reached somewhere near the theater and below is a view before crossing the road. Here is their official website - http://npac-ntt.org/

  20150519_153356   20150519_153920 20150519_154300

This theater is still under renovation and it is estimated to open to all by next year if I'm not mistaken. By then, I believe many event will held at this opera house. After visiting the theater, we head to Tai Chung Train Station and walk to Miyahara (宫原眼科). The ice-cream there is very famous but we didn't buy due to the limited time and the long queue.

Next, aunt brought us to visit something special. A place the local or the tour guide will not bring you there. She brought us to Zhong You Shopping District (中友商圈) to visit their toilet. You did not read it wrongly and I did not type it wrongly. It is the toilet that she brought us to visit. The specialty of the mall is the different design of every single toilet in the mall. I forget how long will the design last for but I remember that they used up around 10000nt to change the theme. I took the other design of the toilet but it is quite blue so I would only post a underwater female and kids toilet.

20150519_17002220150519_170025

After visiting toilets, we went to  Calligraphy Greenway (草悟道/行草悟道) which is a place near our restaurant for dinner. We didn't walk at the Calligraphy Greenway because it is too long and we are not sure where will we be at the other end of the Calligraphy Greenway. So we only took a look at the information board to know more about it. There is two website about it, first one and second one. You can just google it and you will get to see images of it. Also, there will be street performance on and off this place during the weekdays. However for weekends, there will always be people performing and this is a great place for evening walk with love ones. Dinner Time!!! It is around 6.20pm and it is time for dinner, aunt brought us to Italian Pumkin Bistro (南瓜屋紐澳良義大利餐館) for dinner. The food, service and atmosphere was really great. I truly miss this restaurant and the price is reasonable. They serve salad, soup, main course, dessert and drinks. The set i called was around 370nt (cant remember the exact figure).

It was around 8.30pm after the dinner and it time to say goodbye to the aunt that has brought us around Tai Chung City the whole day. We sat on the BRT to Maple Valley Park and look for a taxi(cab) to get back to our hostel like what we did previously. However, the first time we sat on the taxi was at a fixed price, 100nt, but this time, the uncle told us that they charge according to meter and it was 85nt only. By the time we reach our hostel, settle down and clean ourselves was already 9.30pm. Since this is the first time my brother and I went Taiwan, we have not been to any night market and the nearest one was Feng Jia Night Market. So both of us went to take a look and not really to hunt for food because we are really full. Migo stay gave us a map upon check-in and we followed accordingly. Walking distance was about 10-15mins away. We saw a crowded area infront of us and we know that we are at the correct place. We continue walking towards the crowded direction to get to the university and the night market. We found the university and had a walk inside and time to walk around the night market. We saw streets with stalls and that was only a part of the night market after telling local friends that we took an hour to walk the night market. Such a joke because Feng Jia night market is actually the biggest at Tai Chung and Taiwan. Therefore, it is impossible for us to only take an hour. haha. Maybe this is the reason for me to come the next time.

We bought Big sausage wrap small sausage (大肠包小肠) and a cup of black bean tea only.
So all these marks the end of day two at Tai Zhong.

Taiwan 7D6N May 2015 - Preparation

Hello! Hope everyone is doing well, have not been really good as a blogger. However, I will try to post more frequent for you to read. I’m happy to say that, I will be blogging on my trip. I always wanted or hope that I could go to other countries to have a walk, to enjoy and to see how the country is but didn't get a chance. Since I have a brother who is studying in Taiwan, it have been at the top of my list for at least 2 years. However, I told myself that without a phone with better functions and without a camera makes the trip boring and I can't look back at the photos for aftertaste. Saving money is so essential too! Anyway, after trying to get permission to go for a trip for quite some years, thank God I finally get the chance because MAS airline was having promotion and flight ticket is therefore cheap. After comparing the price with Air Asia (AA), the difference was little and why choose AA knowing that there would not be having any meals (extra changes needed) and flight might delay. One thing that we would waste on is the baggage because we won’t be traveling with 30kg bags. So this is the advantage of going for AA. My last vacation going by an aeroplane was eleven years ago. The only thing I pray for is a safe flight after knowing so many cases of aircraft incidents and accidents. The next step after booking a flight is to plan the trip. Three person, including me, we will be going for a 7 days 6 nights Taiwan trip from May 18-24 2015. Will update this blog soon. Stay Tune!

My Planned Itinerary

Day 1(Monday 18/5/15):       Malaysia - TaoYuan Airport – Gao Xiong
Day2 (Tuesday 19/5/15):        Gao Xiong -  Tai Zhong city - Feng Jia
Day3 (Wednesday 20/5/15):   Feng Jia – Ching Jing - Feng Jia
Day 4 (Thursday 21/5/15):      Feng Jia – Tai Pei
Day 5 (Friday 22/5/15):          Tai Pei – Jiu Fen - Dan Shui - Tai Pei
Day 6 (Saturday 23/5/15):      Tai Pei – City day trip - Xi Men Ding - Tai Pei
Day 7 (Sunday 24/5/15):         Tai Pei – TaoYuan Airport - Malaysia

Preparation for Taiwan Trip

1) Booking THSR: TaoYuan to Gao Xiong by THSR (Taiwan high speed railway高铁). I’ve booked the ticket a month ago before the day of travel from their website. If you plan to book the early bird ticket to save up 35% or 9% or 8%, then you need to make sure the timing on that day is correct. If not, your ticket is “burned”. Also, payment for your booking if by using credit card. 2) Accommodation in KaoShiung: While looking for a room, my brother found this and since it is cheaper than the one I manage to search (website), we’ve book the room from the website that leads to another website that tells the further details of the room types. We chose 好望角海景雙人房摩天館 because this is the room that can add an extra bed in a double room at the price of 999nt + 300nt(extra bed) = 1299nt. For your information, there is a 85floors building at Gao Xiong and there are many owners who rent their house or room to tourist. However, some rooms are not placed at the 85floors building but at another building nearby (38floors building if I’m not mistaken) which is only 5mins walk away. 3) Accommodation in TaiChung: If you’re under a budgeted trip, then choosing room at Tai Zhong is not an easy job because there are so many to choose and the price range is almost the same. At first, I wanted to go for a recommended one but all rooms are booked a month ago (before my trip). So I have to look for another one and I’ve decided to book from Migo Stay since there is a room for 3 person at the price of 1400nt x 2(2nights) = 2800nt.

Malaysian Journey

A brief summary on Rehman Rashid's book
“A Malaysian Journey” is Rehman Rashid’s first book completed in Malaysia, his motherland.  His book was rejected by many publisher because of the content written and his only choice left was to self-publish it in 1993. This book was about post world word two when Malaysia was a newly independent country after being colonized by the British. It all starts from stepping in Malaysia after years at Padang Besar railway station. He talks to anyone when he is on his way from one place to the other about Malaysia. He wants to wander around, see the place again, talk to people and see how his homeland is these days. For instant, he met Apu Murugiah, a signalman with Malayan railway station says he think Malaysia is consider not bad compare with Thailand. After going back to his hometown which is his grandmother’s place, he went to Ulu Yam Baru, a village with 85% of Chinese. The new village of the small town had remain characterized by a peculiar compactness.

Furthermore, the creation of Malaysia nearly had a war with Philippines and Indonesia. What set them apart was the problem on religion between Islam and Christianity. Somehow, Malaya should have been the Philippines; and Sabah and Sarawak would have been the Indonesia.

Besides, Rehman also mention how Dr Mahathir change the country when he was the prime minister and about the effects on economic policy that favours Malays over the other ethnic groups on Malaysia. However, New Economic Policy was said as the positive discrimination set towards the non-malays. Not only that, his context on press freedom, politicising of Islam in chapter five about Tunku Abdul Rahman not noticing the growth of disaffection of the Malays and the widening alienation of the Chinese and many others were the hot topics. Lastly, he received the advantage of a personal spiritual journey, a travelogue and also political commentary.

North - Perak

There is only a 0830 train from bukit mertajam to kampar but i had a function to go so i went to the bus station to get a ticket. After asking at a few counter, i was told that there isn't any bus straight to my destination so i had to sit till ipoh to take another bus. i bought my ticket at a counter by the name of e-tika at the price of RM29. Is time to leave and the first thing i did was to get the bus number plate from the counter i bough the ticket from. She says, go and board on the bus over there, 'itu biru punnya economy express, nombor 6788' so i went up at 1230 and waited till 1245 for the bus to go to butterworth. while waiting for the bus driver, a man came up, check and change our ticket to another one. i was surprise to see RM25.90 on my new ticket by economy express. it is cheaper by a few ringgit and so e-tika cheated my money. Why would they do so? i was speechless. anyway, the bus stops at butterworth for an hour and it is wasting my time! The air-conditioning in the bus was bad that i woke up from my sleep because i start to sweat and I was pretty unhappy with it. However, i got no choice but to stay awake and looking out the window to find out where exactly am I. A while later, i recognize the place and know that i will reach soon and yes, it is the toll. 5minutes to the bus station, Amanjaya. In the bus from 1230-1622 to Amanjaya, Ipoh. I went down the bus and a lady saw me and told that there is a bus to Medan Kit, the main bus station to ipoh. so i board on an i reach there around 10mins with the price of RM2.30. I waited for another bus to Kampar for 20mins. Thank God i was the first few to get up to the bus because if i didn't, i would be standing with all the "mangala"! when i saw one by one entering the bus, I remembered Rehman Rashid's story. The foreign labours is getting an identity in Malaysia and the government is not taking full action. Anyway, so many boarded the bus and it was really squeeze. After an hour journey, 1825, finally reach kampar bus station! i could car a taxi to my destination but i choose not to waste so much since i could just get a bus to a station near my place which just cost me RM1.30 rather than RM7 or RM8. Including the waiting time and traveling time, i reached the station at 1850. FINALLY! I've reach this place! a short 5mins walk and I'm there! right there! How happy it is to see the familiar buildings and shops. It was tiring but atleast it was a great experience.
Got to know from the newspaper that the ETS train to penang will operate soon and I am really looking forward to it. That would be a better choice than bus. Don't know who useful will this post be to anyone that is reading this but hope you guys enjoy reading to know more about the transportation system in Malaysia.

Pangkor Island

Let's go Pangkor! Okay, sure, when? That's how we ended up having this trip.
Together with three other church youths, we departed our hostel and went for breakfast at 8.30am and bought some stuff before the journey starts. It is around 10am when we leave Kampar to Lumut. We stopped by Tesco at Sri Iskandar(somewhere near Lumut) to buy some snacks for this 2days 1night.

Welcome to Jeti Lumut !
We parked our car(RM0.60/per hour) and had a 3mins walk to the ticket counter and saw a ferry just leave from the parking building when we arrive. Immediately we buy the ferry ticket(RM10/round trip), waited for 30mins, walk and visit shops in Lumut and bought our lunch to eat at Pangkor island. a few tables set infront of the ticket counter. They're people from snorkeling companies. We had our deal with Horizon, RM100 for 4pax.

HERE WE COME PULAU PANGKOR!
Departed at 12.45pm and

 Arrived Jeti Pangkor at 1.18pm.
This is what you'll see when you walk out of the jeti. PINK colour taxi! It took us around 20mins to reach Pangkor Bay View Resort(RM160/per night) at Teluk Nipah which costs RM15 per trip.
Check-in, put our stuff down, get change and ciao to snorkeling.

Boat trip to Pulau Mentagor, Pulau Giam, Coral beach, Man bay and a few more.
Out to the sea! after visiting a few places, we had snorkeling at Pulau Giam for 2.5hours. It was my first time snorkeling and it was not bad. We had some bread for the fishes from Horizon. It was really nice feeding them and we also went to the furthest we can to enjoy and to see fishes. Some friends were expecting to see corals and more fishes with clearer water. A little disappointment. And the rocks are way too slippery. so, say hi to wounds. Pulau Giam is not too dirty. Yes, there are still some rubbish. So, it will be much better if all tourist were to take care of our mother nature.
That ends our day with Horizon at 5.30pm. We then went back to our resort to clean ourselves and have mask after going under the sun for such long hours.

Dont know what to eat. walk and walk and walk. ended up in this shop at 7.30pm for dinner. we decided to eat and little here and there. So, we ordered 2 bowls of grilled cockles - kerang bakar(RM10), 2 plates of fried rice - nasi goreng kampung(RM10) and 4 glasses of drinks(RM6). The kerang bakar is really nice and we found out that other shops sell at the same price but with a smaller bowl. The sauce, the sauce is really really really delicious. It is for kerang but you can also serve it with fried rice. It tastes really nice if like spicy food. if you're facing the sea, this shop is the first shop from the left.

Nice stop at jagung bakar, RM2.50 each. Smells good, taste good! (y)

Hungry? still want to eat?
While walking down the street, we saw a number of shop selling sting ray, squid, different type of fishes, kerang and more. After asking(survey), this shop sells fresher and cheaper seafood. We ordered one sting ray(RM18) and a plate of squid(RM20). Macam mana masak? rebus bakar dengan byk sambal. We had out seats at the back facing the sea with a nice view, sound of wave and wind. This shop is on my right from my resort.

We went straight to the sea side to look for 蓝眼泪  as planned. But we got pretty upset when we dont see any. So discourage to continue looking for it. And one of my friend then took something from the sand when we were talking about the foreign tourists that are swimming in the sea, as we feel that it is dangerous. Anyway, we thought she was lying, but, Yes, it is what we are looking for! We were so happy and started looking for more. we also make friend with those foreigners as they came to see what is going on. Had a nice chat and yamcha with them before heading back to hostel.

This is how we ended out first day in pangkor around 2am.
GoodNight!

> DAY TWO

We woke up quite early but just lying in the bed because we all were kinda lazy to brush up and get prepare for the day. We only had our breakfast at 11.30am by the sea side.
4 crabs for RM20, 14 goreng pisang for RM6 and keropok lekor for RM4.
They did not really clean the crabs. It is kinda dirty actually. But still we ate like nobody's business. haha. Breakfast was satisfactory, kinda good. We dont have any plan after that and we dont know what to do either. Nothing much in Teluk Nipah and we need to call a taxi to go other places if we want to. No direction. So we just went took pictures at the sea side and playing with the water. We got bored and head back to resort. We stayed there for a while and we know we cant waste our time like that. Out again for kelapa muda but it was too expensive and we met those france friends coincidentally.
Spent the whole morning till 2pm here. Played uno and went do to the sea to swim and play. It was really fun and nice swimming in the sea. I really miss the morning. Swimming in the sea was really fun! Really really fun! if you think i sounded like i'm a good swimmer, opps, sorry, i only know frog style. haha. Anyhow, at least i know how to swim and with the guidance of friends i try to swim further and further. Be extra careful when swimming in the sea too, we need to know our limit to avoid any thing to happen yeah. One and only thing that i really dislike is the taste of the sea. It is way too salty. The fact is that all sea are salty. so i cant complain much. if not i'll sound like a stupid isnt it. After using up our energy swimming, everyone is hungry. Hello lunch. the last thing we did before we leave. We called taxi back at our resort at 4.30pm.
Is time to say goodbye. Sat on the ferry and reached Jeti Lumut at 5.30pm. Get on the car to Sri Iskandar for dinner at a malay restaurant. Reached our hostel around 9pm on Sunday. That's how we spent our lovely weekends.
